You’ve probably heard that 90% of your serotonin is made in your gut. It’s one of those facts that gets repeated in every gut health article — and then nobody explains what it actually means for you. Because here’s the thing: it’s not just a trivia point. It’s a mechanism. Your gut bacteria don’t just happen to be near serotonin production — they actively run the conversion process. When that process breaks down, you feel it in your mood, your sleep, and your digestion simultaneously.

What’s actually happening

Specific gut bacteria, including certain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, directly influence this conversion by producing metabolites that upregulate the enzyme.

Route 2: Kynurenine pathway. Under inflammatory conditions — and this is the critical part — the enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) diverts tryptophan away from serotonin and into the kynurenine pathway instead. This produces neurotoxic metabolites like quinolinic acid, which are associated with depression and neuroinflammation. Systemic inflammation is the switch that flips tryptophan from “feel good” to “feel terrible.”
