You’ve heard that your gut is your “second brain.” It’s a catchy phrase, but it undersells what the research actually shows. What you can do today

Feed the bacteria that produce neurotransmitters. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, and certain gut bacteria help convert dietary tryptophan to serotonin in the gut. Foods rich in tryptophan — turkey, eggs, cheese, nuts, seeds — give your microbiome the raw material. But the bacteria have to be there to process it, which is why gut diversity matters more than any single food.
