The highway your doctor never checks
Your vagus nerve runs from your brainstem down through your neck, past your heart and lungs, and into your intestines. About 80 percent of its fibers carry signals upward — from gut to brain, not the other direction. Your gut is doing most of the talking, and your brain is mostly listening.
What’s it hearing? That depends on what’s living in your gut. Your bacteria produce neurotransmitters, short-chain fatty acids, and metabolites that travel up the vagus nerve like dispatches from a command center. When your microbiome is diverse and balanced, those dispatches say “all clear.” When it’s not, the signals change — and your brain responds with inflammation, mood shifts, and anxiety that doesn’t respond to breathing exercises or positive thinking.

The probiotic did nothing without that physical connection. This is what researchers call “vagal tone” — how well your vagus nerve is functioning. High vagal tone means clear, efficient communication between gut and brain. Low vagal tone means static on the line. And low vagal tone shows up consistently in people with anxiety, depression, and chronic inflammation.
What’s actually damaging your vagus nerve
Here’s the uncomfortable part. The modern lifestyle is a vagal tone wrecking ball.
Chronic stress is the obvious one. When your stress response stays activated, your vagus nerve gets suppressed. Your immune system mounts a response, releasing inflammatory cytokines that cross into your brain. The vagus nerve normally acts as an anti-inflammatory brake on this process through what’s called the “cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.” But when vagal tone is low, that brake doesn’t work. Inflammation compounds. Your brain feels it as a persistent, sourceless anxiety that no amount of journaling resolves.
The research is clear on the mechanism. Bonaz et al. (PMID: 27010234) demonstrated that vagal tone directly modulates sensitivity, gut motility, and inflammatory cascading — and that reduced vagal tone creates a feedback loop where inflammation impairs the vagus nerve, which then fails to control inflammation, which further damages the nerve. It’s a cycle, and it doesn’t break on its own.
What you can do to strengthen the connection
The good news is that vagal tone is trainable. Unlike your height or your eye color, you can actively improve how well your vagus nerve functions. Here’s what the research supports, ranked by impact.
Slow, deep breathing. This is the single most accessible vagus nerve stimulant. When you exhale longer than you inhale — say, 4 seconds in, 6–8 seconds out — you activate the vagus nerve through the respiratory-cardiac coupling mechanism. Your heart rate slows, your parasympathetic system engages, and vagal tone improves. Specific probiotics. Not all probiotics affect the vagus nerve, but certain strains do. They produce short-chain fatty acids during fermentation that directly stimulate vagal signaling. The mechanism is simpler than you’d think: SCFAs activate receptors on vagal nerve endings in the gut wall, which send signals upward. You don’t need a supplement if you’re eating fermented foods consistently.
Gargling and humming. This sounds absurd, but there’s a reason singing teachers are calm people. What to stop doing
If you’re doing breathwork and eating fermented foods but still living in sympathetic overdrive, you’re filling a leaky bucket.
Stop skipping meals. Intermittent fasting has its place, but if your cortisol is already elevated and your vagal tone is low, extended fasting keeps your body in a stress state. Eat regularly. Feed the bacteria that feed the vagus nerve.
Stop ignoring gut symptoms. Bloating, irregular bowel movements, food sensitivities — these aren’t just inconveniences. They’re signals that your gut microbiome is imbalanced, which means your vagal signaling is compromised. Address the gut, and the brain follows.
Stop treating anxiety as purely psychological. If your gut is inflamed, your vagus nerve is impaired, and your brain is receiving distorted signals, no amount of cognitive reframing will fix the underlying problem. You can’t think your way out of a hardware issue.
