You’ve seen the posts. People eating 50, 60, 80 grams of fiber a day, calling it “fibermaxxing,” and swearing their bloating disappeared, their energy skyrocketed, and their gut has never been better. The trend has taken over health TikTok and Reddit, with everyone from fitness influencers to wellness coaches recommending you just… eat more fiber. A lot more. But here’s what the fibermaxxing crowd isn’t telling you: the research on fiber is nuanced, more isn’t always better, and for a significant number of people, flooding your gut with fiber can make things significantly worse.
What’s actually happening
Dietary fiber is the primary food source for your gut bacteria. When bacteria ferment fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) — butyrate, propionate, and acetate — that strengthen the intestinal barrier, reduce inflammation, and regulate immune function. This is the mechanism behind fiber’s reputation as a gut health hero, and it’s real.
But the dose-response relationship isn’t linear. Your gut microbiome has a carrying capacity — the maximum amount of fiber it can process efficiently based on the bacterial communities currently living there. If you’ve been eating 15 grams of fiber a day for years and suddenly jump to 60, your existing bacteria can’t handle the load. The result isn’t better gut health. It’s fermentation overload: gas, bloating, cramping, and in some cases, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) flare-ups.
