You did everything the functional medicine protocol said. Probiotic, prebiotic fiber, the fermented foods, the elimination diet. Your gut is better. Your sleep isn’t. And nobody in the consult room explained why — because the standard functional medicine story about the microbiome-sleep connection runs in only one direction. The research says it’s a loop, and missing the return path is why so many protocols stall.

What’s actually happening

The relationship is bidirectional — and each direction has its own mechanism.

Sleep → gut: Here’s the half functional medicine underweights. Poor sleep doesn’t just result from a bad microbiome — it creates one. Why this is happening to you specifically

What to stop doing
