You wake up feeling fine. Not amazing, but fine. Then you check your sleep tracker. REM was low. Deep sleep was only 47 minutes. Your sleep score is a 62. Suddenly you don’t feel fine anymore. You feel tired. Anxious. Like something is wrong with you. And that anxiety? It’s going to wreck your sleep tonight, too.
What’s actually happening
There’s a clinical term for what’s happening to you: orthosomnia. It’s the phenomenon where the act of tracking your sleep creates anxiety about your sleep data, which in turn makes your sleep worse. Researchers first described it in a 2017 case study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, and the problem has only gotten worse as wearable technology has become more sophisticated and more pervasive.
The mechanism is straightforward. Your sleep tracker generates a number — a score, a percentage, a grade. That number becomes your reality. If the score is low, you feel tired regardless of how you actually slept. If the score is high, you feel validated. You’ve outsourced your subjective experience of rest to an algorithm that, frankly, isn’t that accurate.
Most consumer sleep trackers measure movement (actigraphy), heart rate, and heart rate variability to estimate sleep stages. But polysomnography — the gold standard for sleep measurement in clinical settings — uses EEG brain wave monitoring, eye movement tracking, and muscle activity measurement. The correlation between what your wrist wearable says and what’s actually happening in your brain is moderate at best. A study comparing consumer wearables to polysomnography found that while total sleep time estimates were reasonably close, sleep stage estimation (REM, deep, light) was significantly inaccurate. Your tracker’s “deep sleep” number is an educated guess, not a measurement.
The irony is brutal: the device designed to help you sleep better is triggering the exact stress response that prevents good sleep.
The cortisol connection
Here’s where it gets physiologically interesting. When you check your sleep score and feel anxiety about it, your body does what it does whenever it perceives a threat: it releases cortisol. Cortisol is your stress hormone, and it has a deeply antagonistic relationship with sleep.
Cortisol follows a natural daily rhythm — it should peak in the morning (helping you wake up) and gradually decline throughout the day, reaching its lowest point around midnight. This rhythm is one of the primary drivers of your sleep-wake cycle. When you spike cortisol at night by worrying about your sleep data, you’re directly disrupting this rhythm. Your body is now in a low-grade stress state at exactly the time it should be winding down.
The next night, you go to bed with a background hum of anxiety. Will my score be better tonight? Am I getting enough deep sleep? This meta-awareness of your own sleep process — monitoring yourself as you try to fall asleep — is the opposite of what your brain needs to transition into sleep. Sleep requires a surrender of conscious control. Tracking demands conscious observation. These two states are fundamentally incompatible.

The accuracy problem nobody talks about
Your sleep tracker is wrong more often than you think. Here’s what the research says:
Total sleep time: Reasonably accurate (within 10-20 minutes of polysomnography). If your tracker says you slept 7 hours, you probably slept somewhere between 6:40 and 7:20.
Sleep stages: Significantly inaccurate. Consumer wearables classify sleep stages based on heart rate and movement patterns, but the overlap between stages is enormous. You can have the same heart rate during light sleep and deep sleep. The “deep sleep” number your tracker gives you is a probability estimate, not a measurement.
Sleep onset latency (how long it takes to fall asleep): Often overestimated. Trackers that rely on movement assume you’re awake if you’re moving. But you can be awake and still, or asleep and shifting position. The difference between “I lay there for 45 minutes” and “I fell asleep in 10 minutes but moved around” is invisible to a wrist sensor.
Wake after sleep onset: Often underestimated. If you’re lying still but awake at 3 AM, your tracker may record that as sleep. This means your “sleep efficiency” score might be inflated while your actual experience of fragmented sleep goes unrecorded.
The result: you’re making decisions about your sleep hygiene, your supplement stack, your bedtime routine — based on data that’s only moderately correlated with reality. And the emotional weight you’re giving that data is far greater than its accuracy warrants.
What you can do today
1. Hide the score. Most sleep trackers allow you to disable the daily score or summary notification. Do it. Keep the tracker if you want longitudinal data (weekly or monthly trends are more useful than daily scores), but stop checking the number every morning. If your tracker doesn’t allow disabling the score, consider switching to one that does — or just stop wearing it for a month and see what happens.
2. Track how you feel, not what the device says. Keep a simple morning journal: How do you feel on a scale of 1-10? How many times did you wake up? Do you feel rested? Compare this subjective data to your tracker’s data. You’ll likely find that your felt sense of rest is a better predictor of your day than any algorithm.
3. If you must track, track trends — not days. A single night’s data is noise. A month of data is signal. If you’re using sleep data to evaluate a new supplement, a changed routine, or a different bedtime, look at the 2-4 week trend, not individual nights. Your body doesn’t optimize on a daily cycle — it optimizes over weeks.
4. Address the anxiety directly. If checking your sleep tracker gives you a spike of dread, that’s a cortisol response — and it needs to be treated like any other anxiety trigger. Cognitive behavioral techniques work here: recognize the thought (“my score was bad, so I’ll be tired”), challenge it (“I felt fine before I checked”), and redirect (“the score is an estimate, not a diagnosis”). If the anxiety is persistent, a CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) program is the gold standard treatment — and it doesn’t require any tracking at all.
5. Support your cortisol rhythm instead. Rather than optimizing your sleep score, optimize the hormonal cascade that drives sleep. Morning sunlight exposure (10-15 minutes within an hour of waking) sets your cortisol rhythm for the day. Avoiding screens 1-2 hours before bed prevents artificial cortisol spikes. And certain supplements can support the evening cortisol decline.

What to stop doing
Stop letting a number define your rest. You know how you slept. You don’t need a device to tell you. If you woke up feeling rested, you slept well — regardless of what the tracker says. If you woke up exhausted, something needs to change — regardless of a “90” sleep score.
Stop optimizing sleep like a project. Sleep is a biological process, not a performance metric. The more you try to control it — with trackers, with supplements, with rigid routines — the more you activate the stress response that prevents it. The best sleepers don’t think about sleep. They just sleep. The goal isn’t a perfect score. The goal is not thinking about it at all.
Stop comparing your sleep data. Your partner’s deep sleep numbers are irrelevant to your biology. Your friend’s “consistent 85 sleep score” tells you nothing about their actual rest. Sleep is individual, contextual, and not competitive. Stop treating it like a leaderboard.
What we still don’t know
The orthosomnia research is still emerging. We know the phenomenon exists — clinicians are seeing it increasingly in patients who come in with sleep complaints that resolve when they stop tracking. But we don’t yet have large-scale studies quantifying how many people are affected, or whether certain personality types are more susceptible. There’s also an open question about whether the benefits of longitudinal sleep data (catching sleep apnea patterns, identifying medication effects) outweigh the psychological costs of daily monitoring. The answer likely depends on the individual — but if you’re reading this post because your sleep tracker is making you anxious, the answer for you is probably clear.
