You’ve probably spent money on a hair growth supplement. Maybe biotin gummies. Maybe a collagen powder. Maybe something with seventeen ingredients and a name that sounds like a spell from a fantasy novel. The global hair supplement market hit $1.5 billion last year — and it’s still climbing. The question nobody seems to ask while clicking “add to cart”: do any of these things actually work?

What’s actually happening when your hair thins

By age 50, roughly half of all men and women will experience noticeable hair loss. The primary driver is genetics — a study of identical twins found that male pattern baldness is 79% heritable (PMID 23629119). Your DNA loads the gun. Environment pulls the trigger.

Stress, smoking, and alcohol speed things up. In those same twin studies, the twin who reported more stress or who smoked consistently had more hair loss — same genes, different outcomes. Smoking is particularly damaging because the genotoxic compounds in cigarettes can damage hair follicle DNA and poison the microvasculature at the follicle base.

There’s also a culprit most people never consider: mercury. It concentrates roughly 250-fold in growing scalp hair. One case study involved a 43-year-old woman evaluated for early menopause who turned out to have elevated mercury from a tuna-heavy diet. After she stopped eating fish, her mercury levels dropped, and within seven months her hair regrew completely.

Which means some “hair loss” isn’t really hair loss at all. It’s a heavy metal detox problem disguised as aging.

The biotin myth

Biotin (vitamin B7) is the most common ingredient in top-selling hair loss products (PMID 30586264). Every bottle promises thicker, fuller, stronger hair. Here’s what the research actually shows:

Biotin deficiency does cause hair loss. That part is true. But severe biotin deficiency has never been reported in healthy people eating a normal diet. The only reliable way to become biotin-deficient is to eat large quantities of raw egg whites, which contain a protein that binds biotin and blocks absorption.

If you’re not deficient, supplementing biotin does nothing for hair growth. The evidence for this is consistent across multiple reviews (Yelich et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2024; Patel et al., Skin Appendage Disord, 2017). A 2019 review in Dermatology and Therapeutics covering vitamins and minerals in hair loss concluded that supplementation benefits people only when a true deficiency exists.

And here’s the part that should make you pause: many hair supplements contain biotin at doses 650 times the recommended daily intake. Excess biotin in the blood can interfere with thyroid function tests, hormone panels (including pregnancy tests), and the troponin assay doctors use to determine whether someone is having a heart attack. That’s not a theoretical risk — the FDA issued a safety communication about it.

So the supplement that’s supposed to help your hair might actually be sabotaging your bloodwork.

Zinc and iron: same story

Zinc deficiency can cause hair loss, particularly in people who abuse alcohol. But if your blood zinc levels are normal, taking more zinc won’t grow hair — and it can cause problems of its own. Same with iron. Unless you’re clinically deficient, extra iron doesn’t help your hair. It can, however, cause GI distress and, at high doses, more serious issues.

The pattern is consistent across nutrients: vitamin C, vitamin D, selenium, zinc, iron, biotin. Deficiency causes hair loss. Supplementation beyond sufficiency does nothing for hair — and sometimes makes things worse. We covered the same principle in sleep supplements — the dose that works is the dose that corrects a gap, not the dose that fills a bottle. A selenium supplement manufacturing error once produced a product with 200 times the labeled dose, causing an outbreak of selenium toxicity. The primary symptom? Hair loss. The supplement meant to help hair growth literally caused hair to fall out.

What about collagen and saw palmetto?

Collagen peptides are the newer entrant in the hair supplement space. The theory: collagen supports the dermal layer where follicles sit, so more collagen means better hair. The reality: there are no large, well-controlled trials showing oral collagen supplementation regrows hair in people without a deficiency. Collagen is broken down into amino acids during digestion — your body doesn’t route those specifically to your scalp.

Saw palmetto has slightly more interesting data. A 2020 systematic review in Skin Appendage Disorders found modest evidence that saw palmetto may reduce hair fall in androgenetic alopecia by blocking 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. A 2023 randomized controlled trial showed a standardized saw palmetto oil reduced hair fall over 16 weeks compared to placebo. But “reduced hair fall” and “regrew hair” are different claims, and the effect size was modest.

If you’re going to try a supplement, saw palmetto at least has a plausible mechanism and some trial data. That puts it ahead of biotin gummies, which is a low bar. The same question comes up with magnesium and omega-3s — does the supplement fix a real gap, or just an imagined one?

What to stop doing

Stop megadosing biotin. If you’ve been taking it for months with no change in your hair, you’re not going to see one — and you might be messing with your lab results next time you get bloodwork.

Stop assuming “more is better” with minerals. Zinc, iron, and selenium all have narrow therapeutic windows. The difference between a helpful dose and a harmful one is smaller than you’d expect.

Stop trusting the label claims. Supplement regulation is loose. Manufacturers aren’t required to prove their products grow hair before selling them. A 2018 study found widespread discrepancies between what supplements claim and what they contain.

The supplement question — honest take

If you eat a reasonably varied diet and have no diagnosed deficiency, the most evidence-backed “supplement” for hair is probably one you’re not thinking of: a comprehensive omega-3. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects that may support follicle health, and most people are genuinely below optimal intake. It’s not a hair miracle — but at least the mechanism is sound and the safety profile is well-established.

What we still don’t know

The supplement industry runs on a gap between what people want to believe and what research has bothered to test. Large-scale trials on hair supplements are rare because supplement companies aren’t required to fund them. Most of the studies that exist are small, short, and industry-funded. We don’t actually know whether specific combinations of nutrients work synergistically for hair — because nobody has designed the trial to answer that question. The absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence, but it’s also not a reason to keep buying bottles.
